Proposal Draft 1b

INTRODUCTION
This project will compare the change in population density focusing on New York State. This will help in the comparison to the density of the human population and the clusters of galaxies. Dr. Matt Bellis and his colleagues at Stanford University have written a code to quicken the process of calculating the overall structure of the universe. We will work together to analyze how human population density compares to the clustering of galaxies. On top of working with Dr. Bellis, I am working with Alyssa Endres, a senior Physics major at Siena.

OBJECTIVES
To visually map out the change of population density in New York
To track population data over time
To compare population density with the structure of galaxies in the universe

METHODOLOGY
I will make population density maps for New York in different years as well as the change in density over time.

DATA SOURCES
ESRI Data DVD.

WORK PLAN
Week 1 (10/7): Meet with Dr. Meierdiercks to discuss proposal, and meet with Dr. Bellis and Alyssa to       further discuss the project objectives, methodology, and deliverables.
Week 2 (10/14): Begin working on population density maps
Week 3 (10/21): Finish Population maps begin research in use of available ArcMap tools
Week 4 (10/28): Begin research in use of available ArcMap tools
Week 5 (11/4): Apply tools to population maps
Week 6 (11/11): Finalize map analysis
Week 7 (11/18) Prepare final deliverables for presentation
Week 8 (11/25) Continue to finalize maps
Week 9 (12/2) Finalize everything

DELIVERABLES
Population density maps of New York State
A table of New York Cities and Towns, their area and population

  1. This looks good, Kori. You'll want to add/clarify once you talk with your client, but it seems like you have a nice understanding of the project.

  2. Again, nice job, Kori. I did notice though you citing ArcGIS online as a data source. You'll want to instead cite the ESRI Data DVD. Also, see me during lab - I have another useful data source for you.

  3. Kori,

Cool project. I would like to see how the economy has affected our population over the past few years. To see how it compares to the structures of galaxies is an interesting concept that I look forward to seeing. Good job.
