Week 5 Update

The tables are finished! The tables are done which will make completing the maps much easier with all of the data in one table for counties and one for cities. There are 62 counties in New York and I have data for 994 cities.  I did have some trouble when joining my tables to the attribute table of counties or cities, but I realized that some of the column headings had spaces. I had to go back and make sure I got all of the spaces deleted. Another obstacle I had to figure out was the county St.  Lawrence, the table I made in excel had a period after St. but the one in the ESRI county attribute table did not, so when I went to join them, the St. Lawrence data appeared as NoData. After figuring out the tables, I should be set to make final maps of population density. More maps to come!

Week 4 Update

This week I have been focused on starting the table of cities with their area, and population for 1990, 2000, and 2010 and the population densities for the same years. I have also been doing the same table with counties. The counties table has been much easier because the attribute table with the counties layer came with the area of the county. I am trying to figure out the best way to calculate the area of each city with the city shapefile. The tables also have the latitude and longitude for the city and county. I had to figure out how do add this to the attribute table using the geometry calculator.
